IFWJ demands a Commission for in-depth study of Media

16 Nov, 2018: On the occasion of the National Press Day, different units of the Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ) today resolved to press for their long standing demand that the Government of India must immediately setup a Media Commission to study the workings of the media, which includes the press, electronic and web portals etc; The IFWJ believes that the authentic study of the Media Commission will help the enactment of a comprehensive Working Journalists Act.

The National Press Day was observed across the country and the journalists expressed their apprehensions that the contract system of appointment of media persons without any security cover of the labour laws would definitely j further jeopardize the freedom of the media. Indian Federation of Working Journalists has always been of the view that the vulnerability of the journalists is the real danger to the freedom of speech and expression.

In a statement the IFWJ President B.V. Mallikarjunaiah has asked the Government to replace the present Press Council of India with an effective Media Council which can lead the journalist community from the front by setting an example. He said that the present setup of the Press Council of India does not inspire any confidence among the journalists because its constitution and representation is shady and opaque. He has also demanded that the Government should constitute a Wage Board for the media employees because the wages of average mediapersons are mere pittance and they have become the most exploited section of the society without any proper compensation.
