IFWJ Celebrates Its 68th Foundation Day


New Delhi, 28 October: Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ) vowed today to fight for bringing about the comprehensive amendment to the Working Journalists Act, 1955, protection of journalists, constitution of new Wage Board and the proper implementation of the Majithia Wage Board. Journalists across the country observed the 68thfoundation day of the IFWJ, which was born on 28thOctober, 1950 under Banyan tree at Jantar Mantar of New Delhi.

The main function was organised at Shahidi Park at the feet of statue of the revolutionaries, where hundreds of media persons assembled to celebrate the foundation day. While addressing the meeting the IFWJ Vice-President Hemant Tiwari exhorted the journalists to unite and fight for their rights. He said the expulsion of the unscrupulous elements the IFWJ has become more vibrant, dynamic and strong. Those, who have been misusing this organisation for their own personal interests have now been thrown out of it. The organisation which was digressed from its main aim of fighting for raising the standards of journalism, economic betterment of the journalists and their protection has now been brought on the rails. Shri Tiwari said that thousands of employees who have been deprived of their wages as per the Majithia Wage Board recommendations would not have to wait long for achieving their dues.

The meeting was addressed among others by veteran journalist Arvind Kumar Singh, who emphasized that the media persons who are fragmented in different camps must be brought under one umbrella to make it a strong and cohesive force. IFWJ’s Secretary General Parmanand Pandey recalled the history of the IFWJ and its contribution for the welfare of journalists. The national Secretary Siddhardh Kalhans said that the journalists of the country need to be congratulated for the remarkable unity that they have exuded achieving the goal.

The working President of the Delhi Union of Working Journalists Alkshendra Singh Negi said that there has never been so urgent need for the union than today when thousands of employees are struggling for the implementation of the Majithia Wage Board.

The General Secretary of Indian Express Employees Union CS Naidu expressed his solidarity with the IFWJ and said that the workers will never lag behind if any struggle is launched for the welfare for the media employees. He said that the organisation must wage struggle for the constitution of new Wage Board.

IFWJ Treasurer Rinku Yadav and its legal advisor Mohan Babu Agarwal, C.K. Pandey and R.B. Tiwari, R.S. Tiwari of the Times of India, Ashok Sharma, Mangat Ram Sharma, Mangal Kumar (Dainik Bhaskar) were among the hundreds of those present on the occasion. The Senior Assistant Editor of the Hindi Tribune Dr. Upendra Pandey presence in the IFWJ’s foundation celebration was noteworthy.

Similar programmes were organised in other states. In Chennai the CUJ President Anbu and IFWJ’s national Secretary K. Asudhulla led the celebration.

In Bhubaneswar and Sambhalpur, the UJA orgarnised a massive celebration function. IFWJ Vice President Bibhuti Bhushan Kar has said that the union will soon submit a charter of demands to the state government. As per the reports All Bihar Press Mens’ Union submitted the memorandum to the state government. In Jaipur the IFWJ Vice President Vashisth Kumar Sharma, senior journalist Ish Madhu Talwar and the Rajasthan Working Journalists Union President Harish Gupta and its General Secretary Sanjeev Pachauri led the grand celebration rally.

In Madhya Pradesh five senior journalists who have once been the office bearers of the IFWJ were hononed in the foundation day celebration. The Vice-President K.M. Jha and Madhya Bharat Working Journalists Union President led the show. Reports are pouring in from other states like Haryana where the celebration function was organised by the National Secretary Randeep Ghangas. In Chhattisgarh Journalists Union President Ishwar Dube exposed the misdeeds of those who have been misusing the organisation for enriching themselves.

In Karnataka the IFWJ’s President B.V. Mallikarjunaiah organised a grand function and he said that his Guru in journalism the late S.V. Jayasheela Rao had inculcated the spirit of honesty and devotion to the cause of the trade unions. He said that the IFWJ will never deviate from its path of struggle and unity for the betterment of journalists.

In Uttar Pradesh foundation day celebration function were organised in the capital town Lucknow and other district headquarters. In Uttarakhand the main function was organised under the leadership of Shankar Dutt Sharma, the state president.

In Assam the function is being organised at many places including the Press Club at Guwahati under the leadership of IFWJ Vice President Keshab Kalita, Secretary Gitika Talukdar and the General Secretary of the AUWJ Tutumoni Phukan.
